(14) Mom eating breakfast on her honeymoon Mom: This is always the biggest treat when I go to hotels like this: room service breakfasts on a terrace. Me: It doesn't look like you're eating anything. Mom: Well, I had orange juice and milk. And I didn't eat eggs in those days. I probably had a roll and butter. Me: Wait, why didn't you eat eggs back then? Mom: Do you really want to know? Me: Mom, whenever you say that, there's always a great story. Mom: OK. As a child, my mother forced me--put "forced" in quotes--to drink this mixture of raw eggs, milk, and whiskey. And I couldn't! It was awful, the most horrible thing I ever had. It made me gag. Because it was just hand mixed, so...you know how the egg is. Runny. Nanny didn't make scrambled eggs. She only made sunny-side-up eggs. The idea was that you dipped Italian bread in the yolk. And I never liked that. Me: Funny, whenever Nanny or Grandpa made me eggs, they'd make them scrambled. Nanny would whisk them in a bowl with a fork. Mom: I guess they had different standards for what they made me and what they made their grandchildren. Anyway, I only started eating eggs in my 30s. Whenever I went horseback-riding, a whole group of my riding friends would go to breakfast at a diner nearby, and it was the first time I realized you could have scrambled eggs with potatoes. Me: How did you get through childhood without salmonella poisoning? Mom: I must've had a guardian angel. Remember I was having this egg drink nearly every day--with whiskey--for years. And we didn't get them from the supermarkets back then, we got them from an egg delivery man, who got them from a farm in southern New Jersey. Maybe that's why I didn't get salmonella--because the eggs were very fresh. Breakfast Table Oh goodmorning! This is what I call a dreary day (altho you can't tell from the lighting). It's couldy and spittin with rain. Tris made me peanut butter on toast but the peanut butter was off (and it said it was good until September 07 PAH) So I settled for an apple that had been cut and cored... like my mum used tah do for me! Oh I've got the coffee cup in my hand. I can't possibly have breakfast without caffine. That would be weird.
